Top 5 Comic Book Marriages of All Time...
....or, "My Desperate Attempt to Get Fawn to Post."
In all seriousness though, I have three loves in my life. This blog is dedicated to the most important one, my future bride. I covered one of my other ones in yesterday's post. So its only fitting that I present my third in today's post, and in homage to my favorite Country Music DJ of all time Ian Black, I present it in list form.
5) Ralph Dibny and Sue Dearborn (DC Comics - 1961)
While Batman may be billed as "The World's Greatest Detective," many would argue that he had competition in The Elongated Man, Ralph Dibny. During the Silver Age of comics, it was not common place for heroes to publicly out themselves, but the man above was one of the first. Best yet, Sue Dibny was no damsel in distress. While possessing no super-powers herself, she was a full fledged reserve member of the Justice League, and was her husband's equal in solving crimes, and thwarting villains. Their story came to a close during DC's "Infinite Crisis" and "52." During the conclusion to the latter we see that Sue was Ralph's entire world, and his story tugs on your heartstrings bringing a tear to your eye, even if you're not a comic fan.
4) Reed Richards & Sue Storm (Marvel Comics - 1965)
Mr. Fantastic and the Invisible Girl are easily one of the most recognizable superhero husband and wife teams. And in being such we have seen the roller coaster ride that is their relationship hit its peaks and valleys. While being one of the most relateable couples for this reason (minus the super powers), the only reason it scores so low is due to the Fantastic Four movies. I'm sorry, but the apparent age difference between Ioan Gruffudd and Jessica Alba was just kinda creepy at times.
While we aren't witness to their initial marriage, there's no denying the power of the story of two lovers whose destinies are inter-twined over multiple life times. Shakespeare's got nothing on this one. Why? Because in this case the lovers wielded maces.2) The Green Arrow and The Black Canary (DC Comics - 2009)
The hilarity of the on-again/off-again relationship between these two finally came to fruition this past April, and for those of you who have known Fawn and I since we started dating can surely laugh at the irony that our wedding is also finally coming full circle a little over a month later. This one scores extra points due to the fact that unlike most other wedding issues that circle around a rather sappy storyline, the Arrow/Canary issue contains all sorts of tongue in cheek goodness (including Lois Lane propositioning a male stripper to hit on Wonder Woman).1) Peter Parker and Mary Jane Watson (Marvel Comics - 1987)
Strangely enough, this one is my number one not because of the comic, but because of the movie. Fawn Fun Fact #183: She loves comic book movies! The build up and eventual marriage of Spidey and Mary Jane on the big screen lead to one of the many moments where I though to myself, "I love this girl!" after going off on an extensive rant about how the plot of the first Spiderman movie was actually based on the "Death of Gwen Stacy" story arc from "The Amazing Spider-Man" in 1973, and how the movies had it all wrong. Fawn listened to my ramblings, and STILL agreed to continue dating me! One of my favorite memories ever.Bonus: Jimmy Olsen and "Jungle Jimmy's Bride," a gorilla (DC - 1966)
The cover of this one really says it all. And sorry Superman Nerds, this one is the only way your Boy Scout is making my list.
